Faces of the Uninsured:
Between 2000-2006, in Pennsylvania, the cost of health insurance has gone
up 75 percent while the average wage has only gone up 13 percent. This
escalating cost has meant that adequate health care is becoming beyond the
reach of many Pennsylvanians who cannot afford the cost of premiums.
There are approximately 880,000 uninsured adults in Pennsylvania, and more
than 60 percent are employed (2/3 full-time). Seventy-five percent of
uninsured adults list the cost of premiums as a main reason for not having
insurance. They live in all regions of Pennsylvania, work in all types of
jobs, and lack the access to health insurance that many enjoy. Who are the uninsured?
