Who are the Uninsured in Pennsylvania?
In Pennsylvania, 71% of uninsured adults are employed, the majority working for private businesses. 76% of uninsured adults have incomes less than $60,000 for a family of four, which is 300% of the Federal Poverty Level. 27% of uninsured adults have been without health care coverage for more than 5 years, and 56% have been uninsured for longer than one year.
While most people believe that the uninsured are only young people who choose not to purchase insurance, less than half of uninsured adults, 49%, are between 18 and 34 years of age. In addition, according to a survey by the Insurance Deparment, 70% of uninsured adults stated that cost is the biggest reason for not having health insurance. Additionally, 20% cited loss of employment as a reason. Only 12% listed "no reason in particular" for not having health insurance. These findings indicate that the uninsured want insurance but simply cannot afford it.
